Waterhouse’s Donte Duncan (left) takes evasive action as Joel Cunningham of Arnett Gardens tries to control the ball during their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) encounter at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex last night. Arnett won 1-0.
Arnett Gardens reclaimed the second spot in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) last night after Fabian Reid netted his eighth goal of the season to give them a 1-0 win over Waterhouse in the ‘El Classico’ at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Waterhouse had most of the possession in the first half but were limited to half chances over the period. The hosts had the two best chances of the half, but neither Ajuma Johnson nor Demari Deacon grabbed the opportunities.
After the interval, Andre Fletcher and Denardo Thomas failed to put clear headers on target for Waterhouse with Arnett breaking the deadlock in the 65th minute when Rushike Kelson’s shot was controlled and fired home by Reid from four yards.
Deacon came close to adding a second for Arnett after displaying exquisite skill, but he blasted over from close range.
Arnett coach Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis said his second-half substitutions made the difference.
“It wasn’t a tough game, but in the second half the teams went back and forth. We made some changes, and it changed the whole reflection of the game,” he said.
The win was Arnett’s fourth in a row, and they returned to second position in the points standing with 33, one point ahead of Cavalier and two behind leaders Mount Pleasant.
“The results are good, but we still need to play good football. We have to stop making silly mistakes, but it can only get better,” Davis added.
Waterhouse coach Marcel Gayle said they continue to be on the bad end of results in some close matches, which he blamed on their poor form in front of goal.
“We have our work cut out. It was a very close game, but at the end of the day, they took their chance, and we didn’t take ours, but there were positives in the game,” Gayle said.
Waterhouse are seventh in the table with 21 points.
